The world is about to face global pandemic, the chances are growing, according to health experts and we are all dangerously under prepared, according to a latest report.
According to panel of international health experts and officials, they unanimously pointed towards the 1918 influenza pandemic, to understand it as an example of a global catastrophe.
The influenza pandemic of 1918 had killed as many as 50 million people and if in today’s world a similar contagion happened, that could possibly kill up to 80 million people and expected to wipe out 5% of the global economy.
Global Preparedness Monitoring Board (GPMB), which is an independent monitoring and accountability body, created to advance the common objective of ensuring preparedness for global health crises.
A report from the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board said “The world is not prepared, also co-convened by World Bank and World Health Organization, the same message, they warned about it.
The report details that ” we have allowed a cycle of panic and neglect, for too long, when it comes to pandemics: that we should speed up the efforts, when there is a serious threat, then afterwards quickly forget about them, when the threat subsides. And it is well past time to act.”
WHO tracked 1,483 epidemics worldwide, between the time span of 2011 and 2018, includes Ebola and the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the report further said.
These kind of epidemics and pandemics devastated many of their host countries in past, the West Africa Ebola outbreak also resulted in a loss of about $53 billion in economic and social cost.
And the effects of epidemics and pandemics translates the huge economic costs to the severe real life consequences, the lost jobs, inaccessible healthcare, forced displacement, and greater mortality.
